Web Site Evaluation

Part I
Website Name: The Warhol
Website URL: http://www.warhol.org
1. Who sponsors this website? Is the motivation altruistic or is it a commercial site?
The sponsor of this website is The Andy Warhol Museum, a museum of The Carnegie Institute. The motivation for creating this website is altruistic - to inform visitors to the site about Andy warhol and his works as well as why the museum believes that content to be important.
2. Who is the author of the content? What credentials or address information are provided? Do the authors credentials verify that the site information is most likely accurate?
The author of the content is Phil Ward. There is an email address given to reach the author and a website address as well. No credentials are provided but because the site is associated with The Carnegie Institute I believe the information has been thoroughly reviewed.
3. How current is the information? Do you know how frequently the page is updated?
The currentness of the information varies from item to item. It is not well stated as to how current some things are or when different bits of information are updated. It was stated that pictures are current to within a week but the legal information has not been updated since the year 2000. I also could not find anything about wether or not new works by Andy Warhol are added or if the collection is considered complete.
4. Who is the audience? How do you know this? Does the page meet the needs of that audience?
The website is geared toward young to older adults. The language used in the website is easy to understand and clearly write statements. Much of the information is basic but is too in-depth and serious to be able to get the attention of children. The page more than meets the needs of the audience if they are looking for a site to provide further resources for Andy Warhol. The site also has some good information on Andy Warhol but checking into the other resources provided is recommended.
5. Is the content accurate and objective? Are there any biases? Is this content an overview or an in-depth analysis? Are opinions clearly stated? Are other sources acknowledged?
The content is accurate to the best of my knowledge and is presented very objectively. The only bias present seems to be a belief that Warhol's work transformed contemporary art, a belief which is widely held in the art world and to my knowledge has not been contested. The content provides a broad overview of warhol and his work and also provides an in-depth look at the museum and it's programs concerning Andy Warhol and his work. There are not any personal opinions stated in the website. The information is reported in a very objective manner. Other sources are clearly stated on the legal information page.
6. What is the purpose of the information at this site? Is this purpose clearly articulated?
The purpose of the information at this site is to inform the audience about Andy Warhol and to provide other resources for information but mostly to inform the audience about the programs and projects the museum offers that relate to Warhol's work. There is not a mission statement given but after reading the material this purpose seems to be quite clear.
7. How would this website be useful in instruction? Give specific examples.
This website would be useful in instruction if the teacher needed ideas for getting the students involved in a hands-on approach to art. It is also a valuable resource page.
8. How you might use this web site in your teaching
If I were to use this web site in my teaching I would use it as a resource to give me ideas that I could present to the students on pop-culture and interactive art. I would then have the students try to create their own work of art based on the ideas from Warhol's work.
Part II
1. Design: (3 out of 5)
Organization acceptable, no obvious errors, loads adequately. Average.
My comment:
The organization of this website is acceptable. There is one error concerning the home page button on all the other pages. It does not work. Everything else loads adequately. Because of the one reacurring error I would rate this site as below average for organization.
2. Navigability: (4 out of 5)
Navigation links clear and logical: site map included. Above Average.
My comment:
Navigation of this website is easy to follow. Specific items can be hard to find without a bit of a search.
3. Authority (2 out of 5)
Author name and contact information included but lacks credentials. Below Average.
My comment:
I rate this site as below average because the author's name and contact information is included but it does not have anything that I could find to prove the information.
4. Bias (3 out of 5)
Site is mostly neutral: pages selling are segregated. Average.
My comment:
This site offers information on Andy Warhol and the Warhol museum without much if any bias. A link is provided to the museum store.
5. Citation (2 out of 5)
Citations are included on some sources but not all. Below average rating.
My comment:
These were harder to find than I expected. It is unknown to me where they got some of their information.
6. Date (2 out of 5)
Site contains creation date but no update information. Below average rating.
My comment:
The site contains a few different creation dates for the different pages but update information is unclear.
7. Content (3 out of 5)
Data presented is adequate in terms of quality and quantity. Average rating.
My comment:
There is lots of information about both the museum itself and Andy Warhol and his works.
8. Links (2 out of 5)
Adequate links included, but many no longer functional. Below average rating.
My comment:
Adequate links are included, but the one to take you to the homepage does not function on any page I tried.
9. Handicapped (1 out of 5)
No options available for handicapped. Poor rating.
My comment:
Nothing found for handicap features.
10. Relevance (3 out of 5)
Instructional objective is met. Average rating.
My comment:
Lots of information on Andy Warhol.
