Philip
Stohrer
Media Specialist at Portage West Middle
School
Introduction
If you have read my guide to Evaluating
Web Sites, you will know that one problem with using
the Web for information is that many times the
information cannot be verified. The creator of a web site
can be a respected professor or an egotistical 12 year
old--and you have no way of knowing the difference. The
facts that back up an opinion can be the result of
diligent study, or just made up to add respectability to
an otherwise questionable hypothesis.
In an attempt to offer some credibility to my web
site, I am offering the following data about myself. I am
not a respected professor, but I am an educational media
professional. (I am not, unfortunately, 12 years old any
more, either.)
I hope that the information contained in this site
will be of use to you. The web has much to offer if we
learn to use it correctly with our students.
Background
I grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan graduating from Loy
Norrix High School. I attended Kalamazoo Valley Community
College and Western
Michigan University where I received my B.S. and my M.A.
degrees.
I have been employed as a media specialist since 1977.
I began my career at Portage
Central Junior High School and then at Hartford (Michigan)
High School in 1982. While in Hartford, I was the
assistant Computer Coordinator for the district and the
Cable Access administrator. During this time I was also a
representative to the Technology In Michigan Education (T.I.M.E.)
project. As a part of this project, I was a member of a
writing team that created an instructional unit for
library media specialists as well as a certified trainer
of trainers. In 1987 I returned to Portage to work at West
Middle School as the media specialist.
I am active in the Michigan
Association of Media in Education (MAME) and I am the
past chairman of Region 12, the Media
Specialist of the Year for 2004, and currently the
Vice President for Regions and SIGS at the state level. I
am also a member of the Michigan
Association of Computer Users in Learning.
