About Me

My name is Ryan Mertaugh, and I was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan.  Traverse City is a beautiful place to grow up, I spent my younger years exploring the outside world with visits to the dunes and days spent swimming in Lake Michigan.  I graduated from Traverse City Central High School and made my way to Michigan Technological University where I originally intended on going into forestry.  I found that I did not have the passion for forestry that I had for foreign languages, so I transferred to Central Michigan University so I could focus on French and Spanish.  When I am not studying, my two main passions in life are rock climbing and whitewater kayaking.  I have been all over the world in pursuit of climbing and have seen some astounding things.

My Goals

At this point in time I am double majoring in French and Spanish with a focus in secondary education.  As my studies would imply, my goal is to become a foreign language teacher.  I would really love to see more of the world, so I am also considering traveling around and teaching English as a second language and moving to a different country every three or four years.  In the summer I plan to continue whitewater raft guiding and also I may look into becoming a certified climbing guide.

This is a major passion of mine, and this particular picture was taken on the Moose river in the Adirondacks of upstate New York.
I took this photo while I was in Ecuador on a climbing trip.  My friend Christian and I were there to actually climb the main rock face in the center of the photo but we found that we did not have the proper equipment to climb it safely.  Next time...
