If you want to chat with other teachers, learn more about your hobby, or keep up with the latest Internet discussion on any topic just check out UseNet newsgroups.
1. Begin by using DejaNews to search topics that are of interest. You will find more information about newsgroups linked from their homepage. Notice what group names that are discussing the topics that interest you. Write down the exact name of your favorite group and find it again under it's listing in the news reader.
2. Use the Tilt.net complete directory and search Engine
To Get to the Newsgroups
Option 1:
AOL and online services
Look under keyword to find your topic or under Usenet .
Option 2:
Netscape Reader
Read the newsgroups within Netscape. This is for those with a provider that allows them to get newsgroups.
1. In Netscape, under Options/ Mail and News Preferences/ servers/, make sure that the file for newsgroups is correct.
2. In Netscape, look under the Window button then Netscape News
3. Under options you want to show all newsgroups. Ask your provider for specific directions
Option 3:
Find the Newsgroups on the EDCEN Board
If you are an educator, you can join the EDCEN (Education Central) bulletin Board which provides free E-mail, Newsgroups and FTP for educators. Telnet to EDCEN
(telnet://edcen.ehhs.cmich.edu). You can do this directly from the Netscape program if you have a Telnet program. Be sure to list your Telnet program in Netscape under Options/ General Preferences/ Apps / Telnet application. The EDCEN bulletin board is free to educators but you must apply by mail. You can get the application to join the Edcen at (http://edcen.ehhs.cmich.edu/bks/reg.html ) EDCEN Home Page. After you are given a password by mail, you then can login and give your password. You get an E-mail account and access to the newsgroups.. To find Newsgroups take:
(11) The Teleport, (5) Read usenet news; (6) Read usenet News with mgrn) (standard news reader) to find all posted groups or (9) Read usenet news with Tin to get only the newsgroups after you originally found them in the standard reader.
