• Spy Letters of the American Revolution:  Letters, Spy Methods and Stories
• The Valley of the Shadow:  Read the diaries, letters, and journals from Augusta and Franklin Counties, Virginia
• Read the diaries, journals, newspapers, and official records in the Valley of the Shadow.
• Identify those you wish students to read and analyze.
• Bookmark the cites for students to read from primary documents.
• Example:  Have students read newspapers accounts for the same year and month.  Select the same day or the day after.  Student should read a newspaper article from Virginia and one from Pennsylvania.
• Organize a discussion by creating questions from each newspaper entry for students to answer with a partner.  Have students find answers and prepare for a discussion with the rest of the group.
• Teacher creates answer sheet to guide the discussion.  Do not distribute to students.
• Have students present summaries of their findings to their group members.
• Teacher ask questions about similarities and differences experienced by the Virginia and Pennsylvania communities. Use the teacher's answer sheet to ask prompting questions of students to help them relate any key points that were missed in their summaries.

What was schooling like?

What are the literacy skills of the family? Can every member of the family read and write? Why or why not? What kinds of books are available to the family?

How important is religion to the family's life?

What work does each member of the family do?

What type of property does the family own?

What transportation does the family use to get around?

What games do children play? What do adults do for relaxation?

What family activities might be considered an art or craft today?

How has Civil War effected family life?

What are the roles of women?

How were diaries from Augusta and Franklin Counties alike for:
