• Benchmark 1: Identify way families produce and consume goods and services.

Anticipatory Set Have puppets debate over a piece of candy, having one saying "I need it,"  and the other one saying "I want it."  Then ask the students if they have ever had a conflict like that before?  Then ask the students if  the puppet really needed or just wanted the candy and why?   Discuss with students.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

• Identify the differences between wants and needs.
• Identify wants and needs in own life.

• Teacher will read a short book titled, What do We Need, which talks about the needs of a little boy and his dog.
• The teacher will then give a short presentation about the differences between wants and needs.  Children will give their input about the differences between wants and needs.
• Next, the teacher will use a Silver Burrdett Ginn Big Book titled, Families and Friends.  In this book the students will circle the things that the people at a picnic need and put an x on their wants.
• Finally, each student will get a brown lunch bag, and from the materials in the middle of the table, select two items that represent a need and a want and put them in the bag.  Have students to tell the group why they selected their items as a need or a want.

Closure/Reflection:

Teacher says, "Today we discussed the differences between needs and wants.
Teacher asks:
• How is a need different than a want?
• What are examples of needs?
• What examples of wants?
• Why would you choose a need over a want?
