Grade One

Anticipatory Set:

Input:
  • Mode of Instruction:   Skill Development and Discussion
  • Overview:  Sudents will become aware of classroom surroundings by creating an edible classroom map.   By creating this map,  students will be able to identify North, South, East, and West.
  • Objectives:   Students will become acquainted with map making skills by creating their own map and legend. 
Hands-on-Activity:
 
  • Students will brainstorm in a group to identify an alternative design for the classroom.

  • Teacher will distribute materials to class and instruct students to begin designing their edible maps by creating  a legend.   Briefly explain the concept of a legend.

Closure and Reflection:

Today, we discussed map making skills to redesign our classroom We also talked about directions and the location of objects within the classroom and how these directions helped us find things.   The following questions will help the teacher determine how much information students learned from the lesson.

Questions
  • How is your classroom map different than the example presented in class?
  • If you were given directions to take 10 steps North from the door and 5 steps East, where would you be in the classroom?
  • Describe to someone from another class how you would get from the door to the flag Make sure your directions include North, South, East, or West
