Associated Press: NEA Endorses Kerry for President

No surprise here. You might remember that, earlier this year, a member of the Bush cabinet, education secretary Rod Paige, referred to the National Education Association as a "terrorist organization" and then "apologized" in typically Bushie fashion by instead adding (further) insult to injury. Teachers all over the country reacted by calling, unsuccessfully, for Paige's dismissal. Well, I guess the NEA didn't forget being associated with al-Qaeda, and have endorsed John Kerry for President.

Read it here.

Amusingly, when this Rod Paige incident occurred earlier this school year, one of my education teachers mentioned it in class, and I was the only one who had heard about it. I went into a bit more detail on the event and was accused by one of my fellow students of spreading "liberal propaganda." Which surprised me. Being called a terrorist by the Bush adminstration would, I should think, sour ANY dedicated teacher on that adminstration, no matter how conservative or stupid that teacher might be. But it's not wholly uncommon, at least not at CMU. It consistently breaks my heart when I witness stupid and/or intellectually un-curious future teachers. And I DO witness it.

But I also witness some amazing stuff too, like 22 year-old men getting all misty while talking about how they want to help kids. Or some of the bright, cool, dedicated people I had in my cohorts this past school year. Some of these people simply kick ass. And while I worry about some of the others, I am comforted by the statistic that a large number of new teachers get out of the profession within their first five years. I imagine these others will help make up that large number.
