Multicultural Education
An educational philosophy and curriculum that looks beyond curricula from the white Western European tradition. Some multicultural education models highlight subjects from diverse cultural, ethnic, racial, and gender perspectives. Others represent an immersion in one culture, ethnicity, or race. |

| Urban MAST: Changing demographics of urban areas in the United States have resulted in calls for MAthematics, Science and Technology education reform. The Teacher Education Alliance (TEA), a consortium among Broward County Public Schools, Broward Community College, and Florida Atlantic University, is an alternative approach to teacher preparation. TEA challenges new teachers to be technologically competent, sensitive to diversity issues, knowledgeable, and able to use a variety of teaching strategies to reach all students. | Eisenhower National Clearninghouse Vignettes: The vignettes included here are brief scenarios that illustrate particular equity issues or dilemmas for discussion purposes. Each one presents a single perspective on an event, and the details that are included or omitted reflect that perspective. The vignettes are not limited to classroom situations, but also reflect the concerns of administrators. With over 90 vignetess to select from, here is an example of one: You are a guest speaker at a retreat that has brought together educational policy makers and equity advocates. The equity advocates are discussing the importance of equity in mathematics and science! But the discussion is getting quite heated. Race, gender, and disability advocates are all pushing for their issues to be addressed, and a bit of competition is going on as to which group is MOST underserved. It's becoming quite overwhelming, and some of the policy makers are beginning to look very nervous. You are next on the agenda. What can you do? |

| Project Based Learning - This list came from a publication called Resiliency In Action. It is part of larger article written by Dr. Kretzman and Paul H. Schmitz. The title of article is It Takes a Child to Raise a Whole Village. (The article originally appeared in the 1994-95 issue of Wingspread, a newsletter of The Johnson Foundation.) This list of suggestions fits into this Web site's goal which is to promote not only the use of literature to teach tolerance but to also create action based programs that connect with the ideas in the literature. |
