Club, member, and regulatory news of interest to area boaters

Last Update: September 4, 2007

New bathrooms?

At the September 1 Boat Club meeting, it was reported that theVillage intends to build new bathrooms for the boaters. The plan is to locate them acress from the launching ramp, but closer to the parking lot. The existing facility will be used for public restrooms.

No timeline was given.

DEQ nixes walkway replacement

The wooden walkway will not be replaced with a cement walk, as was originally planned. The DEQ says that it is too close to the wetlands. If a new walkway is built, it must be moved away from the originial walk, approximately in the middle of the park area.

Dock Ramp

New dock ramps were installed this year along the pier and breakwater. The plan is to continue to upgrade as funds are available. This year's project cost $90,000.

SBBC sponsors Boat/U.S. Life Jacket Loaner Program for Kids

It takes under three minutes for a child to drown. Most parents don’t even realize their child has fallen overboard in that time.

To meet the special needs of kids, the Boat U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety sponsors this nationwide effort. By making kid’s life jackets readily available, we hope to educate boaters about the importance of wearing and properly fitting jackets. This is especially important for young children who may not understand the risks involved in boating.  Boaters can borrow kid’s life jackets on a daily basis free of charge .This helps the boater unprepared for visiting children or to safeguard their own child who has outgrown their life jacket. By teaching good habits from the start, parents can raise water-wise kids”.  As stated by Boat U.S. Foundation.

How Boaters Can Borrow a Life Jacket

Boaters can get FREE kid’s life jackets at more than 10 locations nationwide.  Each year, about 50 new locations are added.  Suttons Bay Boat Club has arranged through Boat U.S. Foundation to participate in the Life Jacket Loan Program.
All you need to do is:

  • Visit the Suttons Bay Harbor Master Office
  • Show a driver’s license
  • Return the life jacket to the same site at the end of the day or weekend
Jackets are available in three sizes, to fit infants through children weighing up to 90 pounds.

You may also secure a free brochure on the importance of wearing life jackets and how to properly fit your child in a life jacket through the Suttons Bay Harbor Master Office.

Feds propose shift of Cormorant management to states

The double-crested cormorant, a nuisance around our marina may soon find Michigan waters less friendly.
The messy, fish gobbling water birds are despised by boaters, fishermen, resort operators and others.  Their population has prompted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to propose lifting federal protections for the bird.

If cormorant control measures are adopted by the agency, it means that Michigan and other states will be able to kill the birds in areas where they damage fish and vegetation.

Cormorants have been federally protected since the early1970s when pesticides and humans threatened their existence.  Since protective measures were put into place, the birds have rebounded. Their North American population is now estimated to be two million.

For more on the cormorant, visit the Fish and Wildlife Service web page.
