SBBC-L
@
The Suttons Bay Boat Club Listserve

How to subscribe:
The SBBC Listserve (SBBC-L) is an e-mail forum that allows everyone to communicate with all SBBC members. A great way to ask a question, get help for a challenging project, share information, or plan an event!

To get on the list, or subscribe (it's free), contact Tom Hunt via e-mail at sbbc@edcen.ehhs.cmich.edu.  Please provide your complete e-mail address and name.

How to use SBBC-L:
Once you have subscribed, you will receive a confirmation message via e-mail.

HOW TO POST A MESSAGE
To send (or "post") a message, simply address an email to the address: SBBC-L@CMICH.EDU
this will automatically mail the message to every person who is subscribed to the listserve (including yourself).

Note: Once you send a message to this address, it cannot be taken back. This address automatically relays the message to every subscriber.  The address (SBBC-L@CMICH.EDU) is also called the "list address."

You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must  be sent to the "LISTSERV address,"  LISTSERV@CMICH.EDU.  It is very important  to understand  the difference  between the  two, but  fortunately it is not complicated.

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to LISTSERVE@CMICH.EDU with the following command in the body of your email message:

    SIGNOFF sbbc-l (your.e-mail.address@here)

If you are going to be away from your computer for an extended period of time, and you don't want any messages sent to your ISP's file reader, you can send the "SET NOMAIL" command TO LISTSERV@CMICH.EDU.  You are still subscribed to the list, but you will not get any messages.  When you return, you can resume getting messages by sending the "SET MAIL" command.  Since we do not have a large volume of messages on SBBC-L, you probably won't need this command unless you are going to be away from your computer for an exceptionally long period, such as an entire season.  The advantage of "NOMAIL" over "UNSUBSCRIBE" is that you will not get lengthy acknowledgment and instruction messages as you do when you join a list.

You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET SBBC-L REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy  of your own messages,  so that you can see that the message was distributed and  did not get  damaged on the way.  After a while you may find that this is getting annoying,  especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is  from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from SBBC-L. If  you send a "SET  SBBC-L ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV  will mail you a short acknowledgment  instead, which will look  different in your  mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will  know immediately that this  is an acknowledgment you can read later. Finally,  you can turn off acknowledgments completely with "SET SBBC-L NOACK NOREPRO".

Your subscription options are the usual Listserve defaults.  For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY SBBC-L" command to LISTSERV@CMICH.EDU.

Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived.  You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX SBBC-L" command to LISTSERV@CMICH.EDU.  You can then  order these files with  a "GET SBBC-L LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information.

This  list is available  in digest  form.  If you wish to receive  the digested  version  of the  postings,  just  issue a "SET SBBC-L  DIGEST" command.   Since we do not have a lot of message traffic, DIGEST will be of little use.  It is helpful for larger lists, and can be used if SBBC-L activity increases to multiple daily messages.

Please note that  it is presently possible for other  people to determine that you are signed up to the list through  the use of the "REVIEW" command,  which returns the e-mail address and name of all  the subscribers. If you do not  want your name to be visible, just  issue a "SET SBBC-L CONCEAL" command.

More  information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference  card, which  you can  retrieve  by sending  an "INFO  REFCARD" command to  LISTSERV@CMICH.EDU.

Netiquette and Rules

CONTENT and COURTESY:  This listserve is devoted to subjects of boating, boating safety, Boat Club business and recreational issues related to the region.  Discussion subjects should be limited to these items.  Unnecessary and controversial postings not related to boating issues may result in the removal of the offending party from SBBC-L.

WHO: Be careful of what you post on the listserve since you never know who will be reading the message.  Use the "help" command above to find out more information.

WHAT IS DONE IS DONE: Once you post a message, it is emailed to each subscriber. You cannot cancel a message once it has been sent.

ABUSE: Understand that many of the individuals on this listserve receive hundreds of emails each day. Please reply or post only those messages that have good content. If you start sending personal emails to somebody over the listserve or reply when you really don't need to, then you are diminishing the effectiveness of the listserve. Please keep your messages relevant to the topic.

Finally, when replying to a message, please DO NOT quote the entire message you are replying to. Otherwise you end up with large email files that clog up everybody's machine. We suggest that you quote the portion of the message to which you are replying. This makes it easier to read and much faster.

It is strongly requested not to send attachments with messages via the list. If you want to send attachments, coded or plain ASCII, to list members, do it directly to them off the list. If an attachment is of broader interest to the SBBC-L community, it can be added, or I can pass it on to the list for you.

The list members would appreciate very much, that senders of messages pay specific attention to the text in the subject line, such that it is related to the content of the message.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
